It may surprise you to know that the outer planets don't simply move across the sky in a nice orderly fashion - this article explains why not. The fact that they vary in brightness throughout the year might be more obvious but even this apparently straightforward observation hides a wealth of complications. I also detail my 6-month photographic study of the position of Mars which shows that actuality really does align with theory!
