Anthony's Model Cars

Renwal

The Revival Serie

Virgil M. Exner took great names of American automobile history
and tried to show how they would look in the mid sixties

The first 1964 issue of the Renwal Revival serie had four cars:

- 1966 Duesenberg
- 1966 Mercer
- 1966 Packard
- 1966 Stutz

In 1966 they added three more cars to the serie:

- Bugatti 101CX
- Jordan Playboy
- Pierce Arrow (advertised as Pierce Silver Arrow)

Allthough the idea was good, the interest in these kits was never great. One modelbuilder said: "I was working in a pretty good-sized hobby shop in 1966. When those kits hit our store shelves, even though we had a huge section of model car kits and the customer base to support it, kids simply walked right by the Renwall stuff - they couldn't understand even the significance of the marques. Even though this hobby was very much dominated by kids then, there were adult builders who were buying the MPC Gangbusters series, and JoHan's Gold Cup classic car kits, but even adults rather turned up their noses at all but the Mercer and the Bugatti."

Nowadays the Revival Serie still has a lot of interest of the modelbuilders. Kits posted on auction sites like eBay sell pretty good. I have seen prices of well over $ 300.00 for a kit like the Bugattie 101-CX. Ofcourse the box and parts were in mint condition. Or a Jordan Playboy for $ 405.00!

Renwal also made two kits, the Mercer and the Stutz, as slot car. These rare kits, if complete with all the slot car parts like engine and in mint condition, will easily sell for $ 200 - 300.

Below are pictures of all the kits and some extra information about the kits. And I think that some of htat information will surprise you...

Allright, so were is the surprise information?
Well, take a look at the pictures above. All seven pictures show the text
"Assembly Kit SIZE 1 / 25"
Let's have a look at the next pictures.

Instead of the text:
"Assembly Kit SIZE 1 / 25"
they show the text:
"Assembly Kit SCALE 1 / 25"
And the Mercer and Stutz kits don't longer have the text:
"DESIGNED FOR EASY CONVERSION TO SLOT RACING"
on the box cover. Not that many people know that.
To make things even more complicated for the collector have a look at the three pictures below.
Surprise #2!
These three kits were issued with multi-colored bodies, but there are two versions! One version with the body molded in the colors like the box shows and one version with the colors inverted. To make your collection of the Renwal Revival serie complete you have to do some serious hunting on the auction sites.

And the last surprise Renwal has for us is the Mercer kit. Allthough the body is molded in one color, there are also two versions of this car: one with a red body and white interior and one with a white body and red interior.

Renwal also provided hobby shops with ready built models, the shop displays. These are very rare, but I have one in my collection, the '66 Mercer.
