CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Half Moon Bay Dragons (107-55, Gehrig/Tiant Conference Wildcard) vs. Anchorage Gold Diggers (107-55, Gehrig Division Title) The Dragons dominated the league in the first half, posting the league's best record and hosting the all-star game. But key burnouts in the 2nd half stymied the Dragons' pennant chances, dropping them to the GT Conference Wildcard. Mark Teixeira hit .324 with 45 home runs, 143 runs scored and 118 RBI, and Alex Rodriguez hit 30 home runs with 97 runs scored and 91 RBI. Nick Swisher sported a .373 on base average with 28 home runs, 122 runs scored and 85 RBI. Jimmy Rollins slugged .447 with 21 home runs and 94 RBI. Brian Bannister went 17-3 with a 3.54 ERA, and Ryan Dempster and Zach Duke each won 18 games. Closer Darren O'Day saved 33 games with a 1.37 ERA. The Gold Diggers emerged as the Gehrig division leader early on and never let go. Ben Zobrist had a stellar season, hitting .330 with 38 home runs, 137 runs scored and 94 RBI. Curtis Granderson hit .302 with 37 home runs, 91 runs scored and 105 RBI. Casey Blake hit .289 with 21 home runs, 91 runs scored and 95 RBI. Yunel Escobar hit .275 wtih 16 home runs and 91 runs scored. Randy Wells went 14-5 with a 3.03 ERA and Brad Bergesen went 13-5 with a 2.71 ERA. Jarrod Washburn went 12-5 with a 3.10 ERA. Closer Matt Thornton saved 38 games, went 9-2 and had a 1.29 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Dragons held a 5-4 advantage. Anchorage has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Dragons (Bannister) at Gold Diggers (Kuroda). Game one of this round 1 series would be a closely contested game. In the top of the 3rd, with runners at 1st and 3rd, Mark Teixeira grounded to first. The ball was thrown to 2nd for the sure out, and a runner scored from 3rd to put Half Moon Bay up 1-0. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Yunel Escobar walked, moved to 2nd on a passed ball, moved to third on a 1 out fly out from Robinson Diaz, and scored on a base hit from Mike Cameron. 1-1 tie ballgame after 7 innings of play. Neither team would score in the 8th or 9th, so the game would go on into extra innings. In the top of the 12th, game still tied at 1, Hideski Okajima was pitching for the Gold Diggers, the 5th pitcher of the game for Anchorage. Jimmy Rollins flied out for out #1. Pinch hitter Mark Ellis walked, and Okajima was pulled in favor of Carlos Marmol. Marmol plunked Rajai Davis with the first pitch, putting runners at 1st & 2nd. Mark Teixeira hit a fly out to put runners at the corners with 2 outs. Alex Rodriguez was now at the plate. Rodriguez hit the first pitch seen to the outfield wall, scoring 2 runs with a double to put the Dragons up 3-1. In the bottom of the 12th, Dragons up by 2, the pitcher for the Dragons was Arthur Rhodes, the 4th of the game for Half Moon Bay. Pinch hitter Scott Hairston flied out. Ben Zobrist struck out. In the 5th, the Dragons put themselves on the board with a solo home run from Jorge Posada. They made it 5-2 Gold Diggers in the 6th when Jimmy Rollins smacked a 2-out base hit with runners at the corners. In the top of the 7th, with runners at 2nd & 3rd with 1 out, Maicer Izturis hit an infield single, scoring a runner. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Alex Rodriguez reached first base on catcher interference by Kottaras. 5-4 Anchorage. Jimmy Rollins walked, forcing in another run to tie the game up at 5. In the bottom of the 8th, Ben Zobrist broke the deadlock with a solo home run, putting Anchorage back in front 6-5. In the top of the 9th, Gold Diggers closer Matt Thornton was on the mound. With 2 outs, Alex Rodriguez singled, scoring Pagan to put the Dragons up 4-0. In the bottom of the 5th, Maicer Izturis hit a leadoff solo home run for a 5-0 game. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Mark Teixeira tripled, driving in 3 more runs for a commanding 8-0 Dragons lead. The Gold Diggers would score a few runs in the later innings, but it was too little, too late. Half Moon Bay wins game 3 by a score of 8-2, and are a win away from advancing to the GT Conference Finals. In the top of the 1st, Tony Gwynn hit a leadoff single, Ben Zobrist walked, and Curtis Granderson brought everyone home with a 3-run homer. With 1 out and 2 runners on, Mike Cameron doubled, scoring another run. James Loney grounded out, scoring another runner. With 2 outs, pitcher Brad Bergesen singled, driving in the 6th run of the inning as everyone in the Gold Diggers lineup got an at bat in the inning. Anchorage made it 7-0 in the 3rd when Gwynn walked and scored on an RBI double from Zobrist. Backed by the early lead, Bergesen pitched a 4-hit complete game shutout (at Coors Field!), giving the Anchorage bullpen some much needed rest. In the bottom of the 3rd, Mike Cameron scored the first run of the game with a solo home run. Carlos Ruiz doubled and scored on a 2-out, 2-run homer from Ben Zobrist. 3-0 Anchorage after 3. In the top of the 4th, Nick Swisher put the Dragons on a scoreboard with a solo home run for a 3-1 Gold Diggers game. In the bottom of the 5th, Tony Gwynn Jr walked. Ben Zobrist smoked a grounder past the infield, and Nick Swisher botched the throw, allowing Gwynn to score all the way from first. 4-1 Gold Diggers after 5. In the top of the 7th, Alex Rodriguez hit a leadoff single, moved to 2nd on a base hit from pinch hitter Mike Redmond, and scored on a 2 out single from Rajai Davis. The game remained 4-2 Anchorage heading into the top of the 9th inning. Closer Matt Thornton was pitching for the Gold Diggers. Alex Rodriguez struck out for out #1. Omar Vizquel and Angel Pagan reached base with singles to bring Jorge Posada at the plate. Posada had a big hit, tripling to drive in 2 runs and tied the game up at 4. The game would go into extra innings. Hideki Okajima was pitching for Anchorage in the top of the 10th, the 5th Gold Diggers pitcher of the game. Maicer Izturis struck out, and Nick Swisher flied out to put 2 outs on the board. Mark Teixeira hit a single, and Okajima was pulled in favor of Carlos Marmol. Marmol struggled, walking Rodroguez and Vizquel to load the bases with 2 outs. On a 3-2 pitch, Angel Pagan exercised restraint, getting ball 4 to force in run. The Dragons now led 5-4. In the bottom of the 10th, Dragons closer Darren O'Day was working on his 2nd inning of relief with a 1 run lead. First batter up, Ben Zobrist, lined out. Curtis Granderson walked to put the winning run at the plate in James Loney with 1 out. On a 1-1 pitch, Loney grounded to second base, where Maicer Izturis turned the game and series ending double play. Half Moon Bay wins the 3rd extra innings game of the series by a score of 5-4 to take this round 1 series in 6. The Dragons move on to the GT Conference Finals.
