2008 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Concord Minutemen (98-64, Gehrig/Tiant Conference Wildcard) vs. Hong Kong Cavaliers (101-61, Gehrig Division Winner) The Minutemen and Cavaliers duked it out for the Gehrig division title before the Cavaliers clinched it by 3 games. Jermaine Dye was brought in to Concord during the off-season for his bat, and he provided, hitting .311 with 34 home runs, 94 runs scored and a league leading 153 RBI. Chipper Jones hit .338 with 28 home runs, 110 runs scored and 100 RBI, and Lance Berkman hit .335 with 25 home runs, 110 runs scored and 111 RBI. Ray Durham added 95 runs scored and a .357 on base average, and David Murphty hit .311 with 18 home runs, 61 runs scored and 63 RBI. Johan Santana went 18-8 with a 3.78 ERA, and Ben Sheets won 12 games. Closer duties were scattered around, with Brian Bruney leading the way with 13 saves and a 1.30 ERA. The Cavaliers started the regular season with the #1 overall pick, and ended the regular season as the Gehrig division winner. Carlos Beltran led the way, hitting .307 with 46 home runs, 135 runs scored and 129 RBI. Melvin Mora hit .305 with 29 home runs and 106 RBI, while Jason Giambi hit 32 home runs with 93 runs scored and 102 RBI. Alexei Ramirez hit .303 with 85 RBI, and JD Drew hit .283 with 28 home runs and 89 runs scored. Carlos Lee had a .294 average with 35 home runs, 82 runs scored and 84 RBI. Kevin Slowey won 13 games with a 3.46 ERA, and Armando Gallaraga also won 13. Sergio Romo, Jared Burton and Yusmeiro Petit combined to go 16-0 in relief, and closer Mariano Rivera was once again dominant, saving 35 games, winning another 7 and sported a 0.79 ERA. In 13 regular season games, the Cavaliers won the season series 7 games to 5. Hong Kong has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Minutemen (Santana) at Cavaliers (Slowey). In this opening series game, Concord ace Johan Santana struggled early, putting runners at 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. Carlos Lee singled, scoring a run for the Cavaliers. Melvin Mora was plunked by a pitch, loading the bases. Jose Lopez popped out for out #2. With 2 outs, Bengie Molina smacked a base hit, scoring another run to put Hong Kong up 2-0 after 1 inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jason Giambi was issued a leadoff walk, moved to 2nd when Lee was hit by a pitch, moved to third when Mora hit a fly out, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jose Lopez. 3-0 Hong Kong after 3. The Minutemen made their move in the 5th. Jermaine Dye hit a leadoff double, and there were runners at the corners when Mike Napoli got a base hit. Marcus Thames doubled, scoring Dye and moved Napoli to 3rd. Troy Tulowitzki hit a sacrifice fly to score Napoli and cut Hong Kong's lead to 1. 3-2 Hong Kong after 5. In the top of the 6th inning, Chipper Jones got a leadoff walk. Lance Berkman grounded to first, getting Jones out but Berkman was safe at first. Ray Durham doubled, moving Berkman to 3rd. Jermaine Dye did what he does best, driving in runs, nabbing 2 RBI with a base hit. Concord took a 4-3 lead after 5 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the 6th, Mora hit a leadoff triple and scored on a ground out from Lopez to tie the game up at 4. The score remained 4-4 heading into the 9th inning. Hong Kong closer Mariano Rivera was on the mound. Rivera struggled through the inning, winding up with a bases loaded situation with 2 outs. Facing Lance Berkman, Rivera struck him out to end the inning with no score. In the bottom of the 9th, Concord reliever Joe Nathan was on the mound to face JD Drew. Nathan's first pitch was cracked over the wall for a game ending home run. Hong Kong wins game 1 by a score of 5-4 with the last swing of the bat. After losing the first game, Concord came out swinging in game 2. Ray Durham doubled in the 2nd and scored on a double from Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Ramon Santiago doubled, scoring Saltalamacchia, and with 2 outs, David Murphy hit a RBI single to make it a 3-0 Concord inning. In the bottom of the 2nd, Carlos Beltran singled, stole second, moved to third on a fielding error and scored on a base hit from Bengie Molina. Hong Kong cut the lead to 1 when Carlos Lee smacked a base hit with 1 out, allowing another runner to score. 3-2 Concord after 2. Concord added an insurance run in the 5th with a solo shot by Jermaine Dye. They scored 3 more runs in the 8th, led by a 2-RBI single from Chipper Jones. With a 5 run lead in the 9th Jim Johnson and Joe Nathan were able to keep the Cavaliers from scoring. The Minutemen ride a 14-hit performance from their hitters to win game 2 by a score of 7-2. In the top of the first, Jason Giambi hit a 2 out single, moved to 2nd on a single from Carlos Lee and scored on a Melvin Mora RBI double. In the bottom of the 2nd, Ramon Santiago singled and scored on a triple from Jermaine Dye. 1-1 after 2. Kershaw ran into some trouble in the bottom of the 5th, loading the bases with 2 outs. But Kershaw got Ty Wigginton to strike out, ending the inning with the game tied at 1. Ultimately, Johnson and Kershaw battled to a draw. Kershaw pitched 6 innings, Johnson 6 2/3, and each gave up 1 earned run. In the bottom of the 8th, Hong Kong reliever Jared Burton gave up singles to Cameron Maybin and Chipper Jones. Burton balked, advancing them 90 feet. Wigginton hit a grounder to second, which was sent home to get the advancing Maybin out. Gabe Kapler singled, scoring Jones to put Concord up 2-1. The next batter, pinch hitter Adam Everett, smacked a triple, scoring 2 runs to put Concord up 4-1. Russ Springer pitched for the Minutemen in the top of the 9th with a 3-run lead. After Bengie Molina lined out, Alexei Ramirez connected on a solo home run to cut the lead to 2. After Cody Ross struck out, Conor Jackson walked to put the tying run at the plate with Carlos Beltran. But Beltran wouldn't come through today, grounding out to end the game. Concord rides a 3-run 8th to a 4-2 victory in game 3 to take the series lead. But in the 5th, David Murphy doubled and scored on a base hit from Chipper Jones to make it 6-3 Concord, and in the 8th Concord added another insurance run when Troy Tulowitzki hit a bases loaded fly out to score a runner from third. In the bottom of the 4th, Chipper Jones got a leadoff walk. Lance Berkman doubled, moving Jones to third. Jermaine Dye hit a towering sacrifice fly, allowing Jones to score to tie up the game and Berkman to advance to 3rd. Hideki Matsui hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Berkman and gave the Minutemen a 2-1 lead. Johan Santana had a strong performance in the game, pitching 8 innings, giving up 6 hits, struck out 6 and allowed just the single earned run. Ramon Ramirez pitched the top of the 9th with his team up by 1, just 3 outs away from closing out the series. First batter up, Bengie Molina, grounded out. Alexei Ramirez flied out. Pinch hitter Cody Ross walked, putting the tying run at first. Pinch hitter Darin Erstad singled, putting Ross and second. Up to the plate came Carlos Beltran, with 2 outs and 2 on. A clutch hit could put the Cavaliers in front, but it was not to be. Beltran popped out to the waiting glove of Troy Tulowitzki to end the game and the Cavaliers' season. Concord wins game 5 by a score of 2-1 to clinch the series in 5 games.
