2007 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Aaron/Paige Conference Finals Montreal Voltigeurs (90-72, League Wildcard, 4-3 over Trout in Round 1) vs. Manhatten Beach Mashers (94-68, AP Conference Wildcard, 4-0 over Muckrakers in Round 1) Montreal followed up on their first playoff appearance since moving to Montreal with an epic 7 game round 1 series win over the Elk Grove Trout. Carlos Pena hit 5 home runs with 10 runs scored and 12 RBI in the series, and BJ Upton hit .296 with 2 home runs, 5 runs scored and 7 RBI. Nick Swisher added a .400 on base average with 6 runs scored and Johnny Peralta hit .348 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Josh Beckett went 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA and Jon Garland was 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA. Jonathan Papelbon pitched 4 games of relief, sporting a 1.59 ERA and a save. The Mashers captured the AP Conference Wildcard, then mowed over Paige Division winner Madison in 4 games to advance to the AP Conference Finals. Barry Bonds was acquired specifically for the post-season and he did not disappoint, hitting .417 with a 1.167 slugging average, 3 home runs, 4 runs scored and 6 RBI in 4 games. Brad Hawpe hit .400 with 2 home runs, 4 runs scored and 3 RBI while David Ortiz hit .364 with 2 runs scored. Frank Thomas had 5 at bats, with 2 of those being for home runs with 4 RBI. CC Sabathia had a 2.25 ERA and a win in his lone start, and John Smoltz had a 2.70 ERA and a win in his start. Rafael Perez pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief with a save, and Casey Janssen saved 2 games with a 3.38 ERA. In 13 regular season games the Voltigeurs won the season series 7 games to 5. Manhatten Beach has home field advantage due to their AP Conference Wildcard seeding. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Voltigeurs (Beckett) at Mashers (Carmona). The visiting Voltigeurs were the first team to score in this AP Conference Finals series when Manny Ramirez connected on a solo home run in the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd, Mashers starter Fausto Carmona ran into trouble, loading the bases with 1 out. Nick Swisher eeked out a walk, forcing in a run to put Montreal up 2-0. The next batter, Hunter Pence, went yard. Grand slam home run, and the Voltigeurs were up 6-0. The Mashers would score twice in the bottom of the 3rd, but that would be as close as they would get. Montreal's big 3rd inning provides to be the difference as the Voltigeurs take game 1 by a final score of 7-2. Montreal starter Derek Lowe struggled right at the start, loading the bases with 0 outs in the bottom of the 1st. Chad Tracy hit into a double play, putting 2 outs on the board but allowed Barry Bonds to score from 3rd. 1-0 Manhatten Beach after 1. In the 2nd, BJ Upton doubled and scored on a double from Brendan Harris to tie the game up at 1. In the 4th, Manny Ramirez smacked a solo shot to put the Voltigeurs up 2-1. In the bottom of the 6th inning with a runner on base, Ryan Ludwick went yard. 2-run shot, and Manhatten Beach took the 3-2 lead. In the top of the 7th, pinch hitter Jose Vidro hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout from Rajai Davis and scored on a Nick Swisher base hit. 3-3 tie ballgame. The score remained 3-3 heading into the top of the 9th. Takashi Saito was on the mound for Manhatten Beach working on his 2nd inning of relief. First batter up, Endy Chavez, walked. Pinch hitter Adam Melhuse struck out. With 1 out, Swisher hit a lineout. And with 2 outs, Montreal's inning ended with a groundout from Carlos Pena. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the bottom of the 9th for the Voltigeurs, the score tied at 3. First batter up was Ryan Ludwick. On a 1-1 pitch, Ludwick hit the pitch over the left field wall. Solo home run, and the Mashers win it in the final at bat by a score of 4-3. Montreal tied it up in the bottom of the 1st with a leadoff solo home run from BJ Upton. In the top of the 4th inning, Chad Tracy hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a ground out from Brian McCann and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kazuo Matsui. Montreal tied it up in the bottom of the inning again when Nick Swisher doubled, moved to third on a groundout from Hunter Pence and scored on a ground out from Manny Ramirez. 2-2 game after 4. In the 5th inning, Barry Bonds brought Manhatten Beach out front with a solo home run. After Brad Hawpe and David Ortiz hit singles, Chad Tracy smacked a double to score Hawpe. Beckett was done for the day. With 1 out and runners at 2nd & 3rd, McCann grounded out, allowing another run to score. A 3 run Mashers inning put Manhatten Beach up 5-2. In the bottom of the 8th, Voltigeurs down by 3, BJ Upton hit a leadoff single, moved to 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit from Carlos Pena. Pena moved to 2nd on a ground out from Nick Swisher and scored on a double from Hunter Pence. 5-4 Mashers after 8. The Mashers added an insurance run in the top of the 9th when Coco Crisp doubled, moved to third on a fly out from John McDonald and scored on a sacrifice fly from Bonds. 6-4 Mashers after 8 1/2 innings of play. Casey Janssen was pitching for the Mashers in the bottom of the 9th. Kurt Suzuki was issued a leadoff walk, but pinch hitter Endy Chavez hit into a double play, zeroing out the bases and put 2 outs on the board. Pinch hitter Rajai Davis grounded out to end the game. Manhatten Beach wins game 5 by a score of 6-4 and are now a win away from advancing to the 2007 CDBL World Series. In the top of the 1st inning, Nick Swisher hit a 1 out double and scored on a base hit from Carlos Pena. The Mashers evened it up in the 4th inning when David Ortiz walked, moved to third on a double from Ryan Ludwick and scored when Brian McCann grounded out. 1-1 after 4. The game remained a nailbiter heading into the bottom of the 8th, the score tied at 1. Barry Bonds got a leadoff walk, and Brad Hawpe singled to put 2 runners on. After David Ortiz hit a fly out, Ryan Ludwick went yard. 3-run shot, and Manhatten Beach was up 4-1 with an inning to go. Casey Janssen was pitching for the Mashers in the top of the 9th with a 3-run lead and 3 outs separating Manhatten Beach from the 2007 CDBL World Series. First batter up, Brendan Haris, popped out.
