2007 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Dedham Destroyers (95-67, GT Conference Wildcard) vs. Albuquerque Maul (96-66, Gehrig Division Winner) Dedham returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2003, nabbing the #3 seed as the GT Conference Wildcard. Prince Fielder had a monster season, hitting .280 with 45 home runs, 107 runs scored and 142 RBI. Chone Figgens stole 69 bases with a .387 on base average and 101 runs scored. Josh Hart slugged .482 with 21 home runs and 94 RBI, while Torii Hunter slugged .531 with 33 home runs and 113 RBI. Mark DeRosa added a .350 on base average and 84 runs scored. Tim Hudson went 16-11 with a 3.25 ERA, Jeremy Guthrie was 15-8 with a 2.76 ERA, and Brian Bannister was 15-4 with a 3.98 ERA. Akinori Otsuka saved 16 games with a 2.37 ERA, and Carlos Marmol saved 26 games with a 2.45 ERA. The Albuquerque Maul won their first Gehrig division title since 1997. Grady Sizemore starred at the top of the lineup, with a .376 on base average, 33 stolen bases and 117 runs scored. Todd Helton hit .318 with 24 home runs, 95 runs scored and 117 RBI, while Mike Lowell had 27 home runs, 92 runs scored and 98 RBI. Pat Burrell contributed 34 home runs and 99 RBI, while Jose Reyes scored 89 runs with 47 stolen bases. Brandon Webb won 18 games with a 2.70 ERA, and Chien Ming-Wang and a 2.54 ERA with 14 wins. Jered Weaver won 16 with a 3.71 ERA and Roy Oswalt won 13 with a 3.48 ERA. Rafael Sorinao had a 2.63 ERA and 28 saved games. The Maul's 3.26 team ERA was best in the majors by over a half a run. In 9 regular season games, the Destroyers held the edge 6-3, but Albuquerque has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. Todd Helton faces his old team in the playoffs (traded away to make room for Fielder), as does Chone Figgens (let go in free agency to give Mike Lowell the full time job). ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Destroyers (Guthrie) at Maul (Webb). ******************************************************************* GAME FIVE -- Maul (Webb) at Destroyers (Guthrie). With the series tied up at 2 wins each, game five would determine who had the inside track at advancing to the GT Conference Finals. In the 3rd inning, Grady Sizemore singled, moved to second on a wild pitch from Jeremy Guthrie, moved to third on a flyout from Todd Helton and scored on a Pat Burrell RBI double. Dedham tied it up in the 4th with a solo home run from Prince Fielder. 1-1 tie game after 4. By the time the 8th inning rolled around, both starters were out of the game, holding the other side to 1 run. In the bottom of the 8th, with Matt Herges on the mound for Albuquerque, pinch hitter Aaron Boone doubled and moved to third on a ground out by pinch hitter Timo Perez. The hot-bat of Chone Figgens broke the deadlock, tripling in Boone to give Dedham the 2-1 lead. Jeremy Accardo was pitching for the Destroyers in the top of the 9th, trying to protect a 1 run lead. First batter up was Mike Lowell, who struck out in 3 pitches. Lowell argued with the ump and was ejected. Ivan Rodriguez popped out to third base, and Jose Guillen grounded out to second base to end the game. Dedham wins a low scoring affair by the score of 2-1 to be a win away from advancing to the GT Conference Finals.
