2007 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Alphaville Caution (90-72, League Wildcard) vs. Milwaukee Pilots (110-52, Tiant Division Winner) Alphaville battled it out in the Tiant division and with other teams in the league for playoff position before ultimately nabbing a league wildcard. Kevin Youkilis hit .287 with 21 home runs, 73 RBI and 108 runs scored, while Hanley Ramirez hit .316 with 38 stolen bases, 92 runs scored and 97 RBI. Nate McLouth added 20 home runs and 72 RBI, while Randy Winn hit .271 with 95 runs scored. Chris Young went 17-7 with a 3.17 ERA, and Braden Looper went 14-9 with a 4.44 ERA. Closer Hideki Okajima saved 25 games and won another 5 with a 2.33 ERA. Milwaukee roared out of the gate with the league's best record and never let up, posting a league high 110 runs and the Tiant Division title. Chase Utley hit .334 with 130 runs scored and 113 RBI, and Ichiro Suzuki hit .339 with 33 stolen bases, 96 runs scored and 96 RBI. Carl Crawford added 33 stolen bases and 113 runs scored while Gary Sheffield hit 30 home runs, stole 26 bases and scored 116 runs. Ryan Zimmerman added a .282 batting average with 96 RBI, while Jorge Posada hit .298 with 26 home runs, 87 RBI and 111 runs scored. Joe Blanton went 22-4 with a 3.35 ERA, while Andy Pettitte went 15-8 with a 4.13 ERA. Jonathan Broxton went 12-5 with a 2.52 ERA in relief, while closer Joakim Soria saved 38 games, won another 7 and posted a miniscule 1.40 ERA. In 12 regular season games the Pilots held the advantage 10-2. Milwaukee has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Caution (Young) at Pilots (Blanton). In the opening game of this series, the hometown Pilots were the first team to score when in the 2nd Carl Crawford singled and scored on a triple from Jason Bartlett. The Caution moved ahead in the 3rd when pitcher Chris Young smacked a 2-run home run and Nate McLouth hit a 2-out RBI triple for a 3-1 Alphaville lead after 3 innings. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Ichiro Suzuki hit a leadoff solo home run to cut the Caution lead to 1. Young proceeded to load the bases with 0 outs, and was replaced by reliever Steve Kline. Crawford singled, scoring 2 runs to give Milwaukee a 4-3 lead. Ryan Zimmerman grounded into a double play, putting 2 outs on the board but put a runner at 3rd. Bartlett drove in the 4th run of the inning with a double. 5-3 Milwaukee after 5. In the top of the 6th inning, Joe Blanton loaded the bases with 2 outs. Pinch hitter Jorge Velandia singled, scoring 2 runs to tie the game up at 5. The Pilots broke the deadlock in the bottom of the 7th when Chase Utley walked, moved to 2nd on a walk to Jorge Posada, moved to third on a double play ball and scored on a base hit from Ryan Zimmerman. 6-5 Pilots after 7. The score remained 6-5 heading into the top of the 9th. Milwaukee had stuck with Blanton through 8 innings, and now it was Joakim Soria time. First batter up, Mark Ellis, struck out. Gary Bennett grounded out for out #2. Pinch hitter Travis Buck singled, putting the go-ahead run at the plate. Soria would shut it down, striking out Kevin Youkilis to end the game. Alphaville jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Randy Winn hit the first pitch he saw out of the park for a solo home run. In the bottom of the inning, Dustin McGowan loaded the bases with 0 outs. Chase Utley smacked a double, scoring 2 runners. Jorge Posada grounded out, scoring another for a 3-0 Milwaukee lead after 1 inning of play. In the top of the 2nd, Elijah Dukes hit a leadoff home run to cut Milwaukee's lead to 1. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jorge Posada hit a 1 out single, moved to 2nd on a ground out from Carl Crawford and scored on a base hit by Ryan Zimmerman. 4-2 Pilots after 3. The Caution cut the lead to 1 in the 5th inning on their 3rd leadoff home run of the game, this time by Mark Ellis. Milwaukee answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, with Posada doubling, moving to third on a Crawford flyout and a score on a base hit from Zimmerman. 5-3 Pilots after 5. The teams traded runs again in the 6th & 7th, with Posada hitting an RBI double in the 6th and Hanley Ramirez connecting on a solo home run in the 7th. The score remained 6-4 heading into the top of the 9th. Joakim Soria once again was on closing duties for the Pilots. Jack Hannahan struck out and Randy Winn hit a fly out to put 2 outs on the board. Mark Ellis walked, bringing the tie run to the plate in Kevin Youkilis. For the 2nd straight game Soria would face Youkilis with 2 outs in the 9th, and for the 2nd straight game Soria would strike him out to end it. Milwaukee wins game 2 by a score of 6-4. In the top of the 3rd with runners at the corners and 2 outs, Jorge Posada doubled, scoring a run. After Ryan Zimmerman was intentionally walked to load the bases, Ichiro Suzuki singled, scoring another runner to give Milwaukee the 2-1 lead. Alphaville tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Kevin Youkilis. 2-2 after 3 innings. In the top of the 5th inning, Sean Casey walked and Posada singled to put 2 runners on. Zimmerman and Suzuki hit singles, scoring 2 runners. Sean Marshall was done for the day. Jason Barlett made it a 3-run Milwaukee inning with an RBI groundout. 5-2 Milwaukee after 5. Alphaville cut Milwaukee's lead to 1 in the 8th inning on a solo home run by Nate McLouth and a 1 out RBI single from pinch hitter Elijah Dukes. Milwaukee closer Joakim Soria was once again called to close the game, pitching in the bottom of the 9th with a 5-4 lead. First batter up, Hanley Ramirez, singled. James Loney grounded out, advancing Ramirez 90 feet. Pinch hitter Matt Kata grounded out, advancing Ramirez another 90 feet. With 2 outs and the tying run at third, Soria faced down Willie Harris. Soria once again shut down the Caution, striking out Harris to end the game and notching his 3rd save of the series. Milwaukee wins another close one by a score of 5-4 and are a win away from advancing to the GT Conference Finals. In the top of the 3rd, Steve Kline ran into trouble, loading the bases with 1 out. Chase Utley singled, scoring 2 runners to tie the game up at 3. After re-loading the bases, Carl Crawford singled, scoring 2 more runners to put Milwaukee up 5-3. The Caution found themselves in yet another bases loaded situation in the 4th inning, and the mighty Pilots offense slammed the door on the Caution's season with 5 more runs.
