2006 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Aaron/Paige Conference Finals Dallas SuperSquad (93-69, AP Conference Wildcard, 4-3 over Muckrakers in Round 1) vs. Manhatten Beach Mashers (104-58, Aaron Divison Winner) The SuperSquad led the Aaron division at the all-star break, but were passed by the Mashers in the 2nd half and had their playoff spot threatened by Arkham before putting in a strong final few weeks to secure the Aaron/Paige Conference Wildcard. The SuperSquad fell to an 0-3 deficit in their round 1 matchup before rallying to win the final 4 games against the Muckrakers to clinch the series in 7 games. In their round 1 series, Derek Jeter hit .500 with 12 runs scored and 4 RBI. AJ Pierzynski hit .375 with 4 home runs and 8 RBI, and Juan Pierre hit .286 with a home run, 3 stolen bases and 5 runs scored. Roy Halladay had a 2.77 ERA across 2 starts wtih a win, and Freddy Garcia had a 1.29 ERA with a win in 2 starts. The Mashers trailed the SuperSquad at the all-star break, but a flurry of trades helped Manhatten Beach to a strong 2nd half and captured the Aaron division title and the league's best record. David Ortiz hit .274, bashed 50 home runs, scored 124 runs and drove in 144. Rafael Furcal had 14 home runs, 31 stolen bases and 102 runs scored, while JD Drew hit .312 with 19 home runs and 110 runs scored. Brian McCann was stellar at the catcher spot, hitting .340 with 28 home runs, 82 runs scored and 39 RBI. Brad Hawpe added a .309 batting average and 89 RBI, while veteran Jim Edmonds hit .278 with 28 home runs and 85 runs scored. CC Sabathis went 22-4 with a 3.07 ERA, John Smoltz went 16-8 with a 2.98 ERA, and Francisco Liriano went 15-4 with a 2.48 ERA. Their playoff rotation was further bolstered by the acquisition of Roger Clemens, who went 3-0 in 6 starts and a 3.28 ERA (and finished the year 10-3 with a 2.73 ERA in total). Mariano Rivera won 10 games in relief, saved another 21 and sported a 2.43 ERA. Fellow closer BJ Ryan saved 13 games with a 1.41 ERA. In 12 regular season contests, the Mashers won the series 9 games to 3. Manhatten Beach has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- SuperSquad (Halladay) at Mashers (Clemens). In this opening series, the franchise ace of the visiting SuperSquad would battle against the hired gun of the Mashers. Roy Halladay and Roger Clemens pitched well early on, throwing shutouts through 3 innings. In the 4th, the Mashers broke the deadlock with a solo home run from David Ortiz. In the 6th, Juan Pierre singled, stole second and scored on a base hit from Roy Halladay. 1-1 tie ballgame. In the top of the 7th, Jacque Jones walked and Adam Dunn doubled to put runners at 2nd & 3rd. At a critical moment, Brian McCann allowed a passed ball, scoring Jones to give Dallas the 2-1 lead. Moises Alou followed up with a base hit, scoring Dunn to put Dallas up 3-1. The score remained 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 9th. Dallas closer Todd Jones was pitching for the SuperSquad. First batter up, McCann, singled to bring the tying run at the plate. Jim Edmonds hit into a potential double play, but made it to first before the SuperSquad could convert. Jose Valentin struck out for out #2. And pinch hitter Ryan Theriot flied out to end the game. Roy Halladay wins the first matchup of the battle of the aces as the SuperSquad win game 1 by a score of 3-1. After being surprised at home in game one, the Mashers came out swining in game two, scoring 2 runs in the 1st on back to back solo home runs from Brad Hawpe and David Ortiz. In the top of the 3rd, Chris Snyder hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a base hit from Juan Pierre, and scored on a single from Derek Jeter. Manhatten Beach extended their lead in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run from Brian McCann. 3-1 Mashers after 3. In the 6th inning, Adam Dunn cut the Mashers' lead to 1 with a solo home run. 3-2 Mashers after 6, and CC Sabathia and Bronson Arroyo each lasted 6 innings. In the top of the 8th, with Francisco Liriano pitching, Garrett Atkins hit a solo home run, tying up the game. Liriano started the 9th as well with the score tied at 3. First batter up, Damian Jackson, smacked a solo home run. Dallas took the 4-3 lead, their first lead of the day. AJ Pierzynski and Derek Jeter each singled to put runners at 1st & 3rd. Juan Encarnacion followed up with a base hit, scoring a runner. Liriano was done for the day. With 1 out, a wild pitch scored Jeter, and Garrett Atkins hit a sacrifice fly to put Dallas up 7-3 after 8 1/2 innings of play. Juan Rivera got a leadoff hit for Manhatten Beach in the bottom of the 9th, but closer Todd Jones came on and got JD Drew to ground into a double play. With 2 outs, Brad Hawpe struck out, ending the game. The SuperSquad scores 5 runs against the Mashers bullpen in the final 2 innings to win game 2 by a score of 7-3, and head back to Dallas in a very advantageous position. The Mashers hitters continued generating run support for Liriano, scoring 2 more runs in the 2nd on an RBI triple from Mike Lamb, followed by Lamb scoring on a wild pitch. In the 3rd the Mashers scored 2 more on a 2-run shot from Ortiz. 5-1 after 3. The Mashers really uncorked on the SuperSquad in the 6th, scoring 6 runs to put the game well out of reach. Liriano lasted 5 innings, throwing 78 pitches and gave up a single unearned run and performed significantly better than his counterpart Freddy Garcia as the Mashers easily win game 3 by a final score of 12-2. In the 2nd inning, Dallas jumped to a 3-0 lead, started by a Garrett Atkins double and score on a base hit from Moises Alou. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Derek Jeter doubled, scoring 2 runners. 3-0 Dallas after 2. In the top of the 3rd, JD Drew hit a 1 out single. Brad Hawpe smoked a grounder to Atkins, who bobbled it. Error to third base, and 2 runners were on. With 2 outs, Brian McCann singled, scoring Drew. Then Jim Edmonds singled, scoring Hawpe. Then Jose Valentin tripled, scoring 2 more runners. The Mashers were now up 4-3, with all 4 Masher runs unearned. The SuperSquad were not done yet. In the bottom of the 6th, Atkins got a leadoff walk and moved to third on a double from Jacque Jones. Adam Dunn grounded out, scoring Atkins to tie the game up at 4. Moises Alou followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Jones to put Dallas up 5-4 after 6 innings of play. In the top of the 7th, with Halladay still pitching, Hawpe hit a 0 out single. A wild pitch moved Hawpe to 2nd, and a 2 out base hit scored Hawpe to tie the game up at 5. Roger Clemens would last 6 innings, Halladay 6 2/3 with the score tied at 5. The game would be decided by the bullpens. Unfortunately for Dallas, their bullpen just wasn't up for it. In the 8th inning, Ryan Theriot hit a 0 out 2-run home run off of Carlos Villanueva. Villanueva loaded the bases with 0 outs and gave up a grand slam to David Ortiz. 6-run 8th inning, and the Mashers put the game well out of reach. The Mashers win game 5 by a score of 12-5, take back home field advantage and push the series back to Manhatten Beach. In the bottom of the 2nd, Rafael Furcal hit a 2 out single and stole 2nd. Mike Lamb was walked intentionally to bring Liriano to the plate. Liriano singled, scoring Furcal to tie the game up. JD Drew followed up with a base hit, scoring another runner to give Manhatten Beach the 2-1 lead. The Mashers added an insurance run in the 6th with a 2 out RBI single from Drew. 4-1 Mashers after 6 innings. Liriano pitched well, throwing 6 innings, giving up 1 run and left the game with his team up by 3 runs. In the 7th on came closer supreme Mariano Rivera to secure the victory. But the plucky SuperSquad were not going to go away quietly. Moises Alou singled. As did Garrett Atkins. With 1 out, Placido Polanco singled to load the bases. Chris Snyder bunted an infield single, and in the ensuing chaos was safe at first with a runner scored. Pinch hitter Damian Jackson got the biggest hit of his season, smacking a base hit to left field, scoring 2 runners to tie the game up at 4. The Mashers kept their poise, taking the lead once again in the bottom of the 7th with a 2 out solo home run from David Ortiz off of reliever Scott Downs. 5-4 Mashers after 7 innings. In the top of the 8th, Mashers reliever Mike Gonzalez was on the mound. Gonzalez gave up a leadoff single to Derek Jeter. Juan Encarnacion followed with a single, and Moises Alou walked, loading the bases with 0 outs. On came Manhatten Beach's other closer, BJ Ryan, for the first time this series. Garrett Atkins hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at 5. Ryan avoided any more scores, getting Jeff Conine to strike out and Polanco to fly out.
