2006 CDBL PLAYOFF PREVIEW World Series Dallas SuperSquad (93-69, AP Conference Wildcard, 4-3 over Muckrakers in Round 1, 4-3 over Mashers in AP Conference Finals) vs. Boston Bulldogs (100-62, Tiant Division Winner, 4-1 over Pines in Round 1, 4-3 over Minutemen in GT Conference Finals) The SuperSquad led the Aaron division at the all-star break, but were passed by the Mashers in the 2nd half and had their playoff spot threatened by Arkham before putting in a strong final few weeks to secure the Aaron/Paige Conference Wildcard. Dallas fought 2 tough 7 game series against the Paige division winning Muckrakers and Aaron division winning Mashers to make their first world series since moving to Dallas. In the conference finals Juan Pierre hit .360 with 4 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Juan Encarnacion hit .350 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI, while Derek Jeter hit .321 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI. Garrett Atkins slugged .522 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. Roy Halladay had a 1.32 ERA across two starts with a win, and closer Todd Jones was solid, saving 2 games and won another without giving up a run in 5 innings of relief. Boston had a strong 2nd half to propel them to the Tiant division title. They beat the Pines in 5 games in their round 1 series and bested the Minutemen in 7 games in the conference finals to make their first world series since 1997. In their conference finals series Lyle Overbay hit .353 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI. Ty Wigginton slugged .786 with 2 home runs, 3 runs scored and 5 RBI, while Ray Durham slugged .552 with 2 home runs, 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. Carlos Zambrano had a 2.13 ERA and a win across 2 starts, and Kelvim Escobar had a win and a 3.00 ERA across 2 starts. In his 2 starts Tim Wakefield posted a 1.32 ERA. Aaron Heilman saved 3 games with a 1.93 ERA across 4 appearances. Scot Shields won 2 games in relief with a 1.93 ERA across 4 appearances as well. In 4 regular season games the teams battled to a 2-2 draw. Boston has home field advantage due to their higher seed value. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- SuperSquad (Halladay) at Bulldogs (Zambrano). 162 regular season games and 3 rounds of playoffs have resulted in the final 2 teams in the league facing off against each other for the 2006 CDBL Championship. In the bottom of the 1st, the Bulldogs jumped to a 2-0 lead on back to back home runs from Lyle Overbay and Ray Durham, a rare mis-step from Roy Halladay. The SuperSquad had a chance to score in the top of the 4th, loading the bases with 1 out. But Halladay popped out and Derek Jeter grounded out to end the inning with no Dallas score. 2-0 Boston after 4. In the 7th inning, Scot Shields came on in relief of Carlos Zambrano, who threw 6 shutout innings. Pinch hitter Frank Thomas walked, moved to third on a base hit from Placido Polanco, and scored on a sacrifice fly from AJ Pierzynski. 2-1 Boston after 7. In the top of the 8th inning, Jacque Jones tied up the game at 2 with a solo home run. In the bottom of the 8th, SuperSquad reliever JC Romero got 2 outs before giving up a double to Bobby Abreu. Carlos Villanueva came on in relief and gave up a 2-run home run to pinch hitter Ty Wigginton. 4-2 Boston heading into the top of the 9th. Boston closer Aaron Heilman was on the mound in the top of the 9th, looking for his first save of the series. Derek Jeter hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a ground out from Placido Polanco. That would be as far as Dallas would get this game, as Heilman struck out AJ Pierzynski and struck out Garrett Atkins to end the game. Boston wins game 1 of the 2006 CDBL World Series by a score of 4-2. Boston cut the lead to 1 in the bottom of the 7th, when Izturis walked, moved to second on a ground out from Lyle Overbay and scored on a base hit from Ray Durham. 5-4 Dallas after 7. Dallas had an opportunity to add quite a few insurance runs in the top of the 9th when Bulldogs closer Aaron Heilman loaded the bases with 1 out. But Heilman got Adam Dunn to strike out and Moises Alou to ground out, escaping the inning with his team still down by 1. Dallas closer Todd Jones started the bottom of the 9th, with his team up 5-4. Ty Wigginton started things off with a base hit. Izturis grounded out, forcing the runner at 2nd. Bobby Abreu flied out to put 2 outs on the board. With 2 outs and his down down by 1, Lyle Overbay tied it up with an RBI double. This game would go to extra innings, score tied at 5. Jason Frasor started the 10th inning for Boston on the mound. AJ Pierzynski singled and moved to third on a base hit from Garrett Atkins. Frasor got pinch hitter Chris Snyder to strike out. With Adam Dunn at the plate, Frasor threw a wild pitch, scoring Pierzynski to put Dallas up by 1. Frasor retired the next 2 batters, but Boston would have to score in the bottom of the inning to keep the game alive. David Riske started the bottom of the 10th for the SuperSquad with his team leading 6-5. Maicer Izturis struck out for out #1 on a 3-2 pitch. Bobby Abreu struck out for out #2 on a 3-2 pitch. With 2 outs, 3 balls and 2 strikes on Lyle Overbay, the next pitch was ... a ball. Tie run at first, winning run, Ray Durham, was at the plate. Riske went to a full count with each of the 3 batters faced so far, but this time got Durham to pop out on the 2nd pitch to end the game. Dallas wins a close one in extra innings by a score of 6-5 to even up the series. The 3rd game of the world series featured a waiver wire pickup (Tim Wakefield) facing off against a veteran pitcher acquired for a 10th round pick (Freddy Garcia). In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Juan Encarnacion put the SuperSquad in front with a solo home run. In the top of the 3rd, Kenny Lofton hit a 0 out double, moved to third on a sac bunt from Wakefield and scored on a base hit from Maicer Izturis. 1-1 score after 3. In the top of the 4th inning, Lyle Overbay got a leadoff walk. Overbay reached 2nd base on a single by Ray Durham and moved to third when a Marcus Thames hit a grounder to short, getting the out at second. Another groundout by Marcus Thames scored Overbay, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Wakefield loaded the bases with 2 outs to bring AJ Pierzynski to the plate. Every game seems to have one of these moments where a single swing of the bat changes everything. For Pierzynski in the 5th inning, that was when he smacked the first pitch thrown to right center field, driving in 3 runners with a double. Dallas jumped ahead to a 4-2 lead. Adam Dunn added an insurance run in the 6th with a solo home run. Freddy Garcia did what he needed to do, throwing 8 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 earned runs and struck out nobody. Todd Jones came on in the 9th to get Lyle Overbay to ground out, Ray Durham to ground out and Marcus Thames to fly out to end the game. Dallas wins game 3 by a score of 5-2 to take the 2006 CDBL World Series lead. Longtime ace Randy Johnson got the start for Boston, who was 2-0 in 3 starts in World Series appearances in '93 and '97. Boston jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st on an RBI triple from Ross Gload followed by a sacrifice fly by Ray Durham. Dallas made it 2-1 Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning when Juan Pierre walked, moved to third on a single from Derek Jeter and scored on a groundout from Moises Alou. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Johnson plunked Pierre and walked Jeter to put 2 on with 1 out. Johnson balked, advancing the runners 90 feet. Juan Encarnacion singled, driving in both runners to put Dallas up 3-2. In the 7th, Abreu walked and scored on a Durham double to tie the score at 3. Johnson would pitch 6 innings, giving up 4 hits and 3 earned runs but neither starter would get the decision today. It was down to the bullpens once again. Scott Downs was pitching for the SuperSquad in the top of the 9th, score tied at 3. Abreu grounded out and Ty Wigginton lined out to put 2 outs on the board. Gload singled, putting the go ahead run at 1st. Downs was pulled after pitching 2 scoreless innings of relief and on came Carlos Villaneueva. Villanueva did what he needed to do, getting Durham to line out to end the inning. Dallas had 3 chances to win the game outright in the bottom of the 9th. Duaner Sanchez was pitching for Boston in the bottom of the inning, having already pitched the 8th. Chris Snyder grounded out for out #1. Damien Jackson hit a 1 out base hit. Juan Pierre grounded out, but moved Jackson into scoring position. 2 outs, tie ballgame in the bottom of the 9th in the World Series, and up to the plate stepped Derek Jeter. A career .307 hitter, Jeter had 2 CDBL Championships under his belt and was hungry for more. Jeter put Dallas one step closer to gaining his third, smacking a base hit between first and second to score Jackson from 2nd base. Dallas wins in the final at bat by a score of 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th, and are a win away from clinching Dallas' first CDBL Championship. FIVE -- Bulldogs (Zambrano) at SuperSquad (Halladay). A big game for both teams. Up 3-1 in the series, at home with Roy Halladay on the mound, this represented Dallas' best chance at winning the 2006 CDBL World Series. If Boston could win game five, they'd shift the series back to home turf for the remaining games. In the bottom of the 1st, Placido Polanco hit a 1 out double and scored on a base hit from AJ Pierzynski for a 1-0 Dallas lead. In the 3rd, with runners at 1st & 2nd, Garrett Atkins doubled, scoring a runner. 2-0 Dallas after 3. Meanwhile, Roy Hallday was everything as advertised, throwing a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings. Halladay gave up his first run of the game in the 8th inning when Eric Chavez doubled and scored on a double from Kenji Johjima. 2-1 Dallas after 8 innings. Todd Jones started the top of the 9th with his team up 2-1, about to face the most important 3 outs of his career. First batter up, Bobby Abreu, grounded out. Lyle Overbay hit a 1 out single to put the go-ahead run at the plate. With 1 out, Ray Durham flied out. 2 outs, Dallas up by 1, and at the plate was Marcus Thames. Thames, who hit .214 during the regular season but with 22 home runs. But Todd Jones had been gold all series, and got Thames to fly out to end the game and the 2006 CDBL Season. Dallas completes their cinderella run through the post-season, defeating Boston 2-1 in game 5 and takes the 2006 CDBL World Series. SUPERSQUAD WINS 4-1, 2006 CDBL CHAMPIONS! WORLD SERIES MVP: Derek Jeter hit .316 with a .417 on base average, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, including the game 4 winning RBI. Roy Halladay went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 2 starts.
