Mark Teixeira got a leadoff walk. Heilman threw a wild pitch, moving Teixeira into scoring position. Bernie Williams was at bat, and knocked in the winning run with a base hit to the delight of the home crowd. Concord wins game 4 by a score of 4-3 in 10 innings to even up the series. With the series tied at 2 wins each, game five would determine who had the inside lane to the CDBL World Series. In the top of the 2nd inning, Aaron Boone walked and Endy Chavez singled, putting 2 runners on with 0 outs. With 1 out, Alex Gonzalez doubled, driving in both runners for a 2-0 Boston lead. In the bottom of the 6th inning, with Chipper Jones at first, Mark Teixeira tied it up with a single swing. Home run over the left field wall and the game was tied up at 2. Concord ace Johan Santana finished the game with 6 innings pitched, giving up 2 runs and left with a tie score. Cla Meredith was on the mound for the Minutemen in the top of the 7th inning. Marcus Thames hit an easy fly ball to Craig Monroe, but Monroe didn't field it cleanly. Error to the outfielder, and Thames was safe at first. Pinch hitter Lyle Overbay singled, moving Thames to third. Bobby Abreu hit into a fielder's choice, but the choice to throw home was not the correct one as Thames made it home safely. 3-2 Boston. Ty Wigginton doubled, scoring 2 runners, and Ray Durham tripled, driving in the 4th run of the inning. Cla Meredith had an outing to forgot as Boston left the top of the 7th with a 6-2 lead. Concord scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but that would be all they could muster. Aaron Heilman came on to pitch 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for his 3rd save of the series as Boston wins game 5 by a score of 6-3. The Bulldogs are a win away from advancing to the CDBL World Series. ******************************************************************* GAME SEVEN -- Minutemen (Mussina) at Bulldogs (Wakefield). The division winners of the Gehrig/Tiant Conference battled to a tie through 6 games. Game 7 would decide who would represent the GT Conference in the 2006 CDBL World Series. In the top of the 2nd inning, Bill Hall hit a leadoff double. Mike Mussina hit a fly out to Bobby Abreu. Hall went to third, and Abreu tried to throw him out .. but the throw was off the mark. Hall scored on the error, and the Minutemen were up 1-0. Both Tim Wakefield and Mike Mussina put on their best performances, throwing a shutout through 7 innings. Tim Wakefield lasted 7 2/3 innings, giving up just 1 unearned run. In the bottom of the 8th, Mussina was pitching with a 1-0 lead. Pinch hitter Ross Gload hit a leadoff single. Pinch hitter Marcus Thames struck out. With Ty Wigginton at the plate, Gload, stole second to put himself into scoring position. Wigginton lined out to put 2 outs on the board. Mussina tired out, giving up a single to Maicer Izturis and a walk to Abreu to load the bases with 2 outs. Mussina was done for the day, and on came Cla Meredith. Meredith had not had a good series so far, and unfortunately for Concord that continued in game 7. On Meredith's 2nd pitch, Lyle Overbay knocked it to shallow right, scoring 2 runners. Bobby Abreu ran to third, where outfielder Norris Hopper tried to throw him out. The ball sailed over the head of Chipper Jones, allowing Abreu to score. 3-1 Boston. After a 46 minute rain delay (where Meredith had to sit alone with the thoughts of what his performance meant), Meredith walked Ray Durham, and Meredith was done for the series, throwing just 6 pitches in game 7. Trevor Hoffman replaced him on the mound. Pinch hitter Matt Diaz added more runs to the scoreboard with a 2 RBI single. 5-1 Boston, with all runs occurring in the 8th inning. In the top of the 9th inning, Boston trotted out Jason Frasor to bring the Bulldogs to the 2006 CDBL World Series, starting out with a 4 run lead. Make that a 3-run lead, as Troy Glaus hit a leadoff solo home run. Then Mike Napoli walked. Bill Hall struck out and Craig Monroe popped out to short for 2 outs on the board. Up to bat was pinch hitter Miguel Olivo. The Minutemen were 1 out away from their season ending. Olivo wouldn't be the hero Concord needed, grounding out to Alex Gonzalez to end the game and the series. Boston wins game 7 by a score of 5-2 to advance to the 2006 CDBL World Series.
